What Is Photodynamic Therapy?

Photodynamic therapy combines a topical light-activated medication with a specialized light source to selectively target damaged skin cells.
After the medication is applied and absorbed, the treatment area is exposed to a specific wavelength of light. This activates the solution, destroying abnormal cells while sparing healthy surrounding tissue.
Over time, the skin naturally regenerates, revealing healthier, more evenly renewed skin.

Our Photodynamic Therapy Treatments

Gold Skin Care Center offers two FDA-approved photosensitizing agents for photodynamic therapy, each paired with a specific light source to effectively target and destroy precancerous cells.

Levulan® (Aminolevulinic Acid) – Blue Light Therapy

Levulan is an FDA-approved topical solution applied directly to areas of sun damage or actinic keratoses. Once absorbed by abnormal cells, it is activated by blue light (BLU-U®), producing a targeted reaction that selectively destroys precancerous tissue while leaving healthy surrounding skin intact. Levulan PDT is a well-established, clinically proven treatment for actinic keratoses and is particularly effective for field treatment of widespread sun-damaged areas such as the face, scalp, chest, and hands.

Ameluz® (Aminolevulinic Acid HCl) – Red Light Therapy

Ameluz is a prescription-strength gel formulation of aminolevulinic acid that is activated by red light (RhodoLED®). Red light penetrates more deeply into the skin than blue light, allowing Ameluz PDT to reach and treat thicker or more stubborn actinic keratoses. Ameluz is FDA-approved for the treatment of actinic keratoses of mild-to-moderate severity and offers a highly effective option for patients with more advanced sun damage or lesions that require deeper penetration.
During your consultation, our providers will determine which photosensitizing agent and light source is most appropriate for your skin concerns and treatment goals.

What Does It Treat?

Photodynamic therapy is commonly used for:
  • Actinic keratoses (precancerous sun spots)
  • Severe sun damage (photodamage)
  • Rough, scaly patches of skin
  • Early non-melanoma skin cancer lesions (in select cases, as determined by a provider)
  • Overall field treatment for sun-exposed areas (face, scalp, chest, hands)

How It Works

Step 1: Application

A photosensitizing solution is applied to the treatment area and allowed to absorb into damaged cells.

Step 2: Activation

The area is exposed to a specific light source, activating the solution and destroying targeted abnormal cells.

Step 3: Healing Response

Over the following days, treated cells are naturally eliminated by the body, allowing healthier skin to regenerate.

What to Expect

Consultation

We assess your skin for signs of sun damage or precancerous lesions and determine if photodynamic therapy is appropriate.

Treatment

The treatment area is prepared, and the photosensitizing agent is applied. After an incubation period, the area is exposed to light activation.

Results

Treated areas may become red, flaky, or mildly crusted before healing. As the skin renews, texture and clarity improve significantly over several weeks.

Is There Any Downtime?

Yes, there is typically a short healing period. After treatment, the skin may appear red, irritated, or slightly swollen for several days. Mild peeling or crusting is also common as damaged cells are shed.
Sun avoidance is extremely important after treatment, as the skin will be temporarily more sensitive to light.
