What is Medical Dermatology?

The various types of dermatology all involve the care and treatment of the skin, nails, and hair. The word “dermatology” comes from the Greek words for “skin” and “study of.” Medical dermatology is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the skin, nails, and hair. In many cases, the dermatologist will also treat conditions that aren’t skin diseases per se but cause symptoms affecting the skin.

Dermatology can be divided into two other broad categories: cosmetic and surgical. Cosmetic dermatology describes treatments designed to improve the patient’s appearance. It can include services like RF skin treatments or laser skin resurfacing. Surgical dermatology covers surgical procedures like removing moles. It can be either medical or cosmetic.

Examples of Medical Dermatology Services

The following services are examples of medical dermatology:

• Skin cancer diagnosis
• Psoriasis treatment
• Hair restoration
• Wart removal
• Vitiligo treatment
• Nail fungus treatment

What is Vitiligo?

Vitiligo is a chronic and painless skin condition in which the patient develops blotches of unpigmented skin. The condition is particularly noticeable in people with dark skin. There is currently no cure for vitiligo, but there are a variety of medical dermatology treatments that can improve the patient’s appearance.

How are Warts Treated?

Common warts in children can be treated with various over-the-counter medications. While such medicines can take weeks, they do work; however, it’s always best to consult a dermatologist.

Cryotherapy is generally the best treatment for an adult with warts. It involves freezing the wart with liquid nitrogen. Other treatments for adults include electrosurgery and laser therapy. A new topical medication called Aldara® has been approved by the FDA as a treatment for genital warts.
